Mountain Lakes Dominate New Lake & River Records

Five recent new lake records have been updated on GON’s Lake & River Record Fish list — all of them on mountain lakes. The Carters Lake record for hybrid bass has been broken twice this spring and six times during the past two years. The Carters record for striped bass has also been reset — this time with a 35-lb., 10.56-oz., 42-inch-long monster.
Heath Pack of Morganton was casting a jerkbait in Blue Ridge on March 26 when this 5-lb., 10.88-oz. brown trout hit. Brown trout aren’t stocked in the lake, but they are stocked in the watershed above the lake. Heath returned the fish to the lake alive.
On March 21, Carters linesides guide Mark Smithwick of Mark’s Guide Service (left) guided Jim Arduino of Smyrna to the new lake-record striped bass. The 42-inch long fish, which hit live bait, weighed 35-lbs., 10.56-ozs. The fish was weighed at the lake on certified scales from Bart’s Bait & Tackle.
Brian Padgett of Calhoun held the Carters hybrid record briefly with this 9-lb., 14.73-oz. fish he caught March 26.
Josh Garrison of Blairsville, a linesides guide on Nottely, set the mark for hybrids with this 8-lb., 11.52-oz. fish. Josh caught the fish March 27 on live bait. Josh said he kept the fish alive and donated it to the Duluth Bass Pro Shops aquarium.
The most recent Carters hybrid record is held by Jeremy Bagley of Chatsworth with this 11-lb., .003-oz. fish. The fish was caught April 12 on a live shad.
