Hunt Story
Scarlett and I had seen this buck a couple weeks ago from the same stand. A wary doe had us pinned while this buck was broadside. By the time Scarlett had a chance to get the scope on him, he had too many limbs in between us and an ethical shot. Fast forward a few weeks, after several afternoons of play practice, piano lessons and other activities we had a chance to get back in the woods. We’d seen no action until two does hurried out of the woods with Scarlett’s 10 point not far behind. She found the buck in her scope and then all that adrenaline hit her like a freight train. I asked if she could shot him, she first said “no daddy, I’m too scared”. It wasn’t that she was really scared, the buck fever had her feeling chemicals her body isn’t used to feeling. I looked at her and told her she could do it, just find that shoulder and pull that trigger. She got back on him while I watched through my binoculars. That boom rang my ears pretty good but I knew her buck was hit hard. He bolted straight with only 3 legs working properly, he started to slow and plow and the whole time I’m yelling, you got him, you got him, he’s going down. The 10 pointer did go down and we high fived 20 times and our smiles were big and I hope she’s hooked. Scarlett handled this like a pro. From passing on him weeks before to making an excellent shot on a Friday the 13th December afternoon. This is one hunt and moment I hope to always remember. Proud of my baby girl. After the buck was loaded and we called her momma and grandaddy and several of my hunting buddies who all were sharing their congratulations, Scarlett said “Now we have to get me a turkey!!!” Yeah we do baby girl, yeah we do.
