The fifth week of last deer season was the primitive-weapons week, which is now also the Youth week, where kids 15 and younger can use a modern rifle. The winner of this week was Reid Diers, of Norman Park, who earned a new CVA muzzleloader. Reid got his winning buck while hunting with his compound bow on a Colquitt County tract. It was a Wednesday evening hunt on Oct. 15.

“I began getting pictures of this buck in July on the edge of a peanut field,” Reid said. “I was able to hunt him a few times early season, but our paths never crossed. In mid-October I hung a lock-on in an area I had been getting pictures of him.”

Georgia’s archery season had seen unseasonably hot temperatures, to say the least. It was borderline unbearable.

“On Oct. 15, it was cooler and rainy, so I headed to the stand,” Reid said. “About an hour before dark my buck and a couple other bucks came out at 75 yards. After about 20 minutes they began to ease out into the field, and I knew this would be my only opportunity to take a shot. I ranged him at 60 yards, settled my pin, and let the arrow fly. The arrow found its mark, and I watched him run out of the field. After an hour, we followed good blood for about 125 yards and made a quick recovery.”

Reid’s buck had 14 total points and netted 139 3/8. Reid now has the No. 4 bow-buck ever recorded from Colquitt County, according to GON’s Deer Records.

Reid will be shooting in the finals to new Silverado pickup truck from long time Truck-Buck sponsor John Megel Chevrolet.
