South Georgia 10-Point Buck Is Picture Perfect

Believing the early December arrival of cooler weather would have a positive effect on deer movement, Justin Roberts decided to spend last Wednesday afternoon checking out his Worth County hunting area. On this particular occasion he decided to take along his 4-year-old son, Levi.

After reaching a blind situated in an area of open pines, adjacent to a low hardwood drainage, they settled in position for the afternoon. Earlier in the year, a trail camera in the area had recorded a couple images of a big antlered buck, however, the deer was never sighted.

Throughout the afternoon, Levi watched a number of does, plus a couple of small antlered bucks move out of the bottom and filter into the pines. By late evening, deer movement out of the bottom had slowed to a stop.

“I was sitting there, thinking the evening was about over, when a large buck suddenly stepped out of the bottom,” Justin said. “I immediately picked up my rifle and began maneuvering into position. Aware of what was happening, Levi had become very quiet. Realizing this was a very big deer, I quickly aimed and fired; at the shot, the buck whirled sideways and quickly disappeared.”

At that point, it would be an understatement to say Levi was excited. Justin was also excited, but while he felt confident about the shot, he decided it would be best to leave the deer for a short while before beginning the search.

“Considering the buck’s size, I didn’t want to take any unnecessary chances,” he said. “Unfortunately, I had a very difficult time trying to explain to Levi why we were leaving without the deer. Having accompanied me on various other types of hunts, we always immediately retrieved whatever was shot. So, I could understand why he was having a problem with this situation.”

Fortunately, Levi didn’t have long to wait. Approximately an hour later they returned to the hunt site, accompanied by Justin’s brother, Mike. The search turned out to be relatively quick, as the big deer had not traveled a great distance. Standing there, looking down at the impressive whitetail, it was a great moment for the family. The exceptional 10-point rack, with long matching tines is estimated to gross in the 160s.
