Shopping Or Hunting? Wise Choice Leads To First Deer In 5 Years On Meriwether County Club

Keith Ross with a great Meriwether County buck. He’s had seven surgeries this year, so the 150-class deer was a special blessing.

My wife was hosting a wedding shower on Dec. 15 for a young lady at our church, and I was told to leave the house for at least three hours, so it was either shopping or hunting. I have had seven surgeries since the start of hunting season, so I was just out enjoying myself and really killing time. I arrived at 3 p.m. at my club in Meriwether County. I spoke to another member who was packing up to leave, and he mentioned that I haven’t hunted much, and I explained that due to all the surgeries it had been a tough year. I hunted the closest box stand nearest our camp area, overlooking a clearcut, and I was the only member out of 31 hunting the property of over 2,600 acres.

At 5:30 p.m., two does walked in from behind the box stand into the plot, and the next minute the buck arrived.  He bolted into the clearcut after the shot, and there was no blood found in the plot. The sun was setting and then became pitch black. I contacted my good friend and hunting guide, Adam Lewis, of Newnan, and he advised that after he finished dinner that he would come out with a really good light and bring two of his five children to help. I decided to drive the 8 miles to my home and eat myself.

We met up later in Lutherville, and he followed me to the club. After 20 minutes, Adam and his son found the deer, and we finally got it to the camp around 9:30 pm. I attached a photo of Adam and the two children. I donated the meat to Adam for his help, and I advised my wife and the young lady from church that they could have another wedding shower any day during deer season. Shopping or hunting, I think I made the right decision.

This is the only deer I have harvested on the club in five years, so my patience really paid off. We think it’ll gross in the 150s.
