A new No. 2 buck has officially been registered for Laurens County, a giant, clean 10-pointer taken by Stevie Drew, of Cadwell, on Nov. 14, 2020. The deer grossed 168 5/8 inches and netted down less than 3 inches to 165 7/8.

“I thought I had missed the deer, he didn’t flinch or anything but just kept right on going,” said Stevie.

The big 10 showed up on trail-camera pictures in June. Stevie and his two grown sons, Jensen and Dalton, both from Dublin, had just leased a brand-new piece of property and wanted to assess what bucks may be around.

“We only have two daytime pictures of this deer,” said Stevie. “The first daytime picture was in September, the second on in October. Both those pictures fell on the new moon.”

Although Nov. 14 was nowhere near the new moon, it was the peak of the rut for Laurens County.

“My son (Jensen) told me to go and hunt his stand, he was going to another piece of property that morning,” said Stevie.

The stand was situated on a food plot in an area of mature pines.

“I had seen about 10 deer that morning, and then he showed up. I could see his feet at first,” said Stevie. “I thought it was just going to be an 8-pointer. We pass on a lot of 8-pointers, but when I got a look at him, he was right on a doe and 20 yards away. I shot.”

Stevie was convinced that he had missed the buck because it just kept right on going behind the doe. In fact, Stevie stayed in the stand hoping the big buck would come back by his stand and offer another shot.

“When my son got there, I was still in my stand. I told him there was no way I hit the deer,” said Stevie.

There was no blood from the .270 bullet that indicated a hit, but 40 yards away the buck was discovered piled up dead.

“The deer was so close the bullet never even expanded, it just went straight through,” said Steve.

Stevie said he was not a GON subscriber, so the buck wasn’t eligible for the Truck-Buck Contest. But he’s a subscriber now.

“I had it for years, and then my sons grew up and I just started reading theirs. I never thought I’d kill a buck like that,” said Stevie.

The 10-pointer is No. 2, only behind the booner killed by Darrell Evans in 1992.

“I know Darrell,” said Stevie. “I called him and said I’m right behind you.”
