A ticket to Stuttgart, Ark. for the Super Bowl of duck calling — not to mention the coveted title as the 2008 Georgia State Champion — went to Clint Shipman of Byron during Georgia’s sanctioned state event held at the Outdoor Blast in Macon on Aug. 8. Competitors had to blow in three rounds of…

15 Doves, 3 Wood Ducks A Day?

Hope the birds are flying on opening day. Getting your limit of fast-flying doves may be even more of a challenge this year. A good wood-duck hole could be a lot more fun this winter, too. How does three woodies heading home for the oven taste? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has already…

Good Season So Far For Georgia Duck Hunters

Despite the drought, many duck hunters have had a good season already. If you have water in your pond or beaver pond, you are likely to have some woodies. Here are some reports from around the state: • Altamaha WMA: Jay Daniell of Tifton said the hunting was good on Rhetts Island on Dec. 15…

Wet Feet For Public Wood Ducks

The morning was cold — not cold enough to ice the pond, but cold enough to make me wonder if I had time to pour another cup from the thermos. As usual, it took a chilly morning in the water to discover a new hole in my waders… an even more convincing argument for a…

The city plans to zone the property as conservation land and develop the land for “eco-tourism” including hunting, fishing and bird-watching. The land proposed for…

16 Degrees, Mallards Working The Pond

It sure seemed dark, a thick blanket of fog not helping matters. With no warning, a half-dozen black forms swung out of the fog in front and banked hard left, not 30 yards off the water, and landed on down the willow-lined bank just out of shotgun range. I checked the time — five minutes…

Do-It-Yourself Duck Ponds

Georgia isn’t known for its red-hot duck hunting. We are a long way from the rice fields of Arkansas and clouds of mallards. For most Georgia duck hunters a good morning hunting means you were able to slog into a beaver-pond swamp and scratch down your pair of woodies. There are some exceptions. Some private…
