Two 12-Foot Gators Taken At Seminole

Two giant alligators, both measuring more than 12 feet long, were taken at Lake Seminole during opening weekend of Georgia’s limited, quota-only alligator hunting season. Frank Timmons, of Columbus, and his friend Greg Kolb, from Missouri, snagged one of the 12-plus-foot gators. On Friday, Aug. 14, the two met up at the Wingate’s Lodge on…

WRD’s Quota Hunt System Back On Track

There was some confusion after the Aug. 1 alligator quota hunt drawing was administered. Hunters reported getting two e-mails from WRD, one stating they were successfully drawn for an alligator hunt, followed up with another that said they were not drawn for an alligator hunt this season. Other hunters reported not getting any confirmation about…

Get Your Georgia Gator

From the start, when a season was established in 2003, a permit to hunt a Georgia alligator has been a hot-ticket item. The number of permits available has risen over the past decade from 180 that first year to 850 now, but the number of permits available is still a drop in the bucket compared…

State-Record Gator Taken On Seminole

Four Decatur County residents made Georgia history on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. Dr. Daniel White, Alex “Bud” Harrell, Gary Braswell and tag-holder Jim Overman bagged a new state-record alligator from Lake Seminole. Giant Georgia Gators Trickle In From 2011 Hunts

It may not be Georgia’s new state record alligator, but without a doubt it is one of the largest hunter-killed gators ever taken in the state. With two separate measurements reported on a Eufaula gator killed opening morning, there was a little bit of confusion on what the official measurement would be. There was some…

New Georgia State Gator Record!

Randy Hand, of Decatur, now holds the Georgia state record for the longest hunter-taken alligator after killing this 13-foot, 9-inch monster at Lake Seminole on Sept. 19. The gator weighed 692 pounds. Randy’s gator is just 2 inches longer than the old record, a 13-foot, 7-inch Blackshear gator taken in 2008.

Wayward Coastal Gator Spotted 20 Miles Offshore

Researchers conducting North Atlantic right whale work spotted a 5-foot alligator March 9 about 20 miles offshore from the mouth of the Altamaha River. At first, whale observers thought the animal was debris. After getting closer, they realized the gator was very much alive. The researchers snapped a few photos and moved on because they…

Beat the Learning Curve This Alligator Season

The alligator has roamed this planet for millions of years. It has gone from predator to prey and survived near eradication from the continent in the 1950s. These beasts have been around since the time of the dinosaurs; they are the true Jurassic Park of our time. After three years of waiting for a tag…
