Colquitt County Giant Should Make Book!

Georgia hunters killed more than 160,000 antlered bucks last season, but not one of those deer has emerged as a Boone & Crockett class buck. This year, many reports say the harvest is down from last year, but already there’s been a record number of Pope & Young bucks killed and now the second buck with the potential of making the elusive Boone & Crockett record book has been harvested.

On Nov. 22, Thanksgiving morning, Tim Carter, of Enigma, killed an incredible buck in Colquitt County that has been green-scored in the high 170s. The B&C minimum is 170. The rack will have to dry for 60 days before it can be officially scored, but Tim’s monster buck looks like a good bet to make the book.

Tim, 27, had only killed two deer, a spike and a doe, before his Thanksgiving morning hunt. His stand was in a hardwood bottom area with some pines and thick spots in the area. At about 7:30 a.m., a doe came walking out just 30 yards in front of the hunter.

“It took all I could do to not to shoot the doe,” said Tim.

It’s a good thing because five minutes later out walked the buck of a lifetime.

“I like to swallowed my tongue,” said Tim. “I have a tendency to get buck fever any way, and this buck was incredible.”

Tim has a raised scope and because the buck was so close he lined up with his iron sights. One shot and Tim had killed the second buck of the year in Georgia with a good chance at making the B&C book.

The buck’s body matched its antlers. It weighed 240 pounds on the hoof. The circumferences at the bases measured 5 1/2 inches, and the 12-point buck has 27- and 28-inch main beams.

Tim Carter’s Colquitt County buck has been green-scored in the high 170s.
