Brantley County Back Porch Buck

There are lots of advantages to living in the woods.

Ricky Lee, of Brantley County, has been an avid deer hunter his whole life, and he’s spent countless hours chasing bucks in the swamps and hardwood bottoms of south Georgia. He’s always hoped one day he’d cross paths with a monster buck, and on Oct. 29 that’s exactly what happened.

The only thing…. Ricky wasn’t in the woods.

“I was sitting at home that morning on the couch watching my grandson and having a cup of coffee. I was looking out back into my field and watching some does that were feeding. We keep them fed year-round, and we enjoy watching them from the house,” said Ricky.

At roughly 7:30, Ricky detected movement next to the treeline roughly 200 yards away and immediately realized that it looked to be a pretty decent buck. He retrieved his 7 Mag and quietly eased out onto the back porch, careful to not make any noise.

“When I got propped up, the buck was about 200 yards out and headed for the does that were 80 or so yards away. You could tell he was in full rut mode,” said Ricky.

Carefully aiming the crosshairs, Ricky squeezed the trigger, dropping the buck instantly.

“I felt like he was a good one, but I didn’t realize just how big. It wasn’t until I got out there and walked up on him that I could see just how massive he was. I was absolutely blown away,” Ricky added.

Ricky Lee has been passing up young bucks and providing quality nutrition on his Brantley County property, and it paid off with this 12-pointer that’s going to easily crack the Top-10 of the county’s best all-time bucks.

The Brantley County bruiser has been green scored at an impressive 142 3/8 inches with a 16 3/4-inch inside spread, 7.25-inch G2s, G3s that measure at 8.25 and 8.75, and G4s that come in at 6.5 and 6.75. There are two kicker points that make the buck a solid 12-point that should rank highly in GON’s all-time records.

“I’m calling him my back porch buck. It wasn’t a typical hunt for me, but it’s pretty neat how it worked out. I’ve hunted for one like that my whole life, and I’m mighty thankful to have had the chance to take him.”
