Amie Jones Takes “The Traveler” Buck In Worth County

GON Staff | October 29, 2021

Amie Jones, 18, of Sylvester, unknowingly took down a famous Worth County buck nicknamed “The Traveler” by those around their hunting area.

On the morning of Oct. 22, Amie made it to her homemade box blind in the middle of a pine stand just before daylight.

“All last year we saw this deer on our cameras, our neighbors did, too, but never in daylight or while anyone was hunting,” said Amie.

The Traveler was nicknamed such simply because he made the rounds. However, he hadn’t been seen on any trail cameras this year, which led everyone to believe someone finally killed him.

“I was only in my stand about 15 minutes, watching a few does, when two more does and a buck caught my eye to the left of my stand,” said Amie.

At 220 yards away, Amie thought the buck was a big-framed 6- or 8-point, but she still wanted to take a shot at him.

Amie got the buck in her crosshairs and used her Mossberg Patriot .308 to take her shot.

“He didn’t drop immediately, so I waited for a few minutes, then called my Uncle Will to help find him,” said Amie. “He brought his dog, Prissy, and within no time, we tracked him down, only about 30 yards away.”

It wasn’t until Amie saw the buck up-close that she realized it was The Traveler.

“I was over the moon, but I teared up at first wishing my Granddaddy WK could have been there,” Amie said. “He passed in July, he taught me how to hunt. I wish he could’ve seen it.”

Amie took to the monster buck to J&J Taxidermy in Acree where it was rough scored as a typical main-frame 12-point at 153 inches.

“I just really want to thank my parents for supporting me, my Uncle Will for help with preparing for the season and Todd and Becky Tanner for getting my scope mounted and sighted in,” said Amie.
