When Colby Brown arrowed a 135-inch buck in Jasper County on Oct. 18, he thought his season was made. However, he was only warming up to what would be his best season ever.

On Nov. 26, Colby once again had his bow in the stand. This time he was in Newton County and ended up shooting a 13-pointer than grossed 153 inches and has been entered into Week 11 of Truck-Buck.

GON Editor Brad Gill photographed and interviewed Colby with his buck:

“I had seen the buck on a few trail cameras over the last month or so, but he only daylighted maybe three times, and two of those times were early mornings during light rain when I was not hunting,” said Colby.

The buck’s last daytime appearance on camera was the morning of Nov. 26.

“I decided to slip in early that afternoon,” said Colby. “Several does and smaller bucks came through not long after I was set up, but then about 5:30, I noticed a larger-bodied deer coming out of a pine thicket, and it was the buck I had been after. He came straight in front of me within 20 yards, but he was behind a few trees and facing toward me, so I could not get a good shot.”

After 10 minutes of waiting, Colby got the shot he wanted.

“I made a good shot and was pretty sure I heard him crash close by, but it was too thick to see from my stand,” said Colby. “I texted my dad, and he said I should sit tight until he could get there since it was getting dark soon. He was there within 30 minutes, and I took him to where I shot the buck. There was really good blood, but my arrow was not there. We followed blood for maybe 15 yards, then my dad shined his flashlight ahead the way the buck was going, and to my surprise we could see the buck laying dead maybe only another 15 yards away. My brother and his friend showed up about that time and helped us drag the buck out.”

Colby, who is 20 years old, said this is the biggest buck he’s ever taken. He sat for this deer 24 different times.

“We found out later when gutting the deer that my broadhead had actually split the top of the heart, so it was a good shot, but the arrow just had not passed all the way through. I am so thankful to have been able to harvest such a great buck, and I can’t wait to have him hanging on my wall,” said Colby.
