11 Photos: Coyote Attack On Talbot Buck Caught On Trail Cam

Brad Gill | October 3, 2020

I’ve heard some say that a coyote won’t mess with a healthy, big-bodied buck. That’s might true for about 99% of coyotes, but then there’s that 1%…

The below series of 11 trail-camera photos of a Talbot County coyote getting after a buck on the afternoon of Sept. 1. The photos were sent in by GON subscriber Tom Gibson, of Loganville, who describes what he found on his Browning trail camera as “once in a lifetime pictures.”

I absolutely agree.

“My camera was set at a salt lick that we have been adding salt and mineral blocks to for over 20 years, so it usually holds a good bit of water,” said Tom. “I had my camera set to take two pictures together, then wait five minutes before it armed again. As you’ll see in the time stamps, I could have gotten a lot more if I didn’t have that long of a delay. Looking at those time stamps, it looks like this battle lasted almost 30 minutes.”

The first picture from the Sept. 1 encounter was taken at 5:27 p.m., and the last one of just the buck by itself was snapped at 5:53 p.m. When Tom pulled the card from the camera on Sept. 24, he said he doesn’t recall seeing anything unusual where the camera was placed.

“I don’t think the coyote was successful, as I didn’t notice anything around the site where the camera was, although I wasn’t really looking. I hadn’t looked at the pictures yet,” said Tom. “I do have a picture the day after of the same coyote coming to the site to check it out, and he’s still covered with mud. We haven’t seen this buck before, but we also haven’t really been looking near this site too much.”

Tom believes the buck to be healthy and not suffering from a vehicle collision that could cause a predator like a coyote to possibly capitalize on a hurt buck.

“The camera is probably a good mile at least from the nearest road, the nearest road is Highway 80 that goes between Columbus and Macon,” said Tom.

Tom said he knows these pictures are an anomaly since the average coyote won’t mess with a buck of this size. He does have some speculation as to why the song dog thought to take on an animal so much larger.

“If you look at some of the pictures, it looks like he suffers from a bad case of the mange. It looks like the rear half of his body doesn’t have any hair on it. The coyote might have just been going crazy because of that,” said Tom.

In rare cases, coyotes have been known to attack humans. Rabies are usually the cause for that sort of strange behavior.

As far as Tom knows, the buck in the photos is doing fine, although he hasn’t checked his cameras since discovering the rare pictures.

“We know we have a coyote problem, though,” said Tom. “One of the members in our camp, his son taught himself to trap. In 2015, he trapped from January to June and trapped 24 coyotes off that property, and it’s 400 acres. We got about five this year but didn’t trap real hard. We’re kind of over run with coyotes.”
