Tired Creek Hosts Mattie’s Mission Fundraiser

Craig James | July 30, 2021

On July 24, the King of the Kayak Series hosted an open kayak fishing tournament at Tired Creek Lake. The tournament benefited Mattie’s Mission, a non-profit that uses its resources to help in the fight against childhood cancer.

The event drew nearly 25 anglers from various parts of Georgia, and more than $1,300 was raised for Mattie’s Mission in the process.

“It was a great turnout for a great cause,” said Tournament Director Jason Lee.

“When we first scheduled the event several months back, we decided this was going to be a trophy tournament only, with no cash prizes and all money raised going straight to Mattie’s Mission. We wanted to keep the focus where it needs to be and still have some fun competing in the process.”

As stated above, 23 anglers participated in the tournament and anglers managed to catch more than 100 fish during the half-day event. Nearly a dozen fish were scored at longer than 20 inches, three of which were longer than 22 inches, and the big fish of the day came in at 22.5 inches long.

Davis Summerlin managed to pull off the win with an impressive five-fish limit coming in at 91.5 inches, an average of over 18 inches a fish.

Blake Boyd with a fish that weighed about 8 pounds caught during the tournament. Blake’s fish measured 22.25 inches and was not quite big fish of the tournament. A longer fish measuring 22.50 inches took the prize, although it didn’t weigh quite what Blake’s fish did. Kayak tournaments use inches versus weights to determine standings.

“With an inch of rain falling at the lake the night before, we didn’t have real high hopes that the fishing would be good, but man were we surprised. As far as quality fish goes, Tired Creek has to be one of the best lakes in the state right. We definitely hope to host some more tournaments at the lake in the near future,” said Jason.

“Folks were catching fish at a pile of different depths, a bunch of different ways. I saw people catch fish on buzzbaits, ChatterBaits, plastic worms and several other lures, all kinds of ways, all kinds of places. The fish were really turned on good.”
