Hartwell Record Redeye Bass

GON Staff | May 1, 2004

Steve Williams, of Dallas, set a Lake Hartwell and a Georgia state record with a redeye bass he caught April 17, 2004. Steve’s 3-lb., 7-oz., redeye bass surpassed a 3-lb., 5-oz. redeye caught on Lake Hartwell in 1999.

The South Carolina state record redeye was caught April 4, 2001 by Randy Dixon, of Westminster, S.C. That Lake Jocaseee redeye bass weighed 5-lbs., 2.5-ozs. Before the Jocassee bass, the all-tackle record for the species was 3-lbs., 2-ozs. and was caught in Alabama in 2000.

The redeye bass is a unique species with its entire range limited to Alabama, Georgia and small parts of Tennessee and South Carolina. Research indicates the fish in South Carolina and parts of Georgia is actually a separate species referred to as Bartram’s bass.
