Soque River

Georgia's Soque River has gained fame in trout fishing circles for producing trophy rainbow and brown trout. Almost all of the river is private, although access through commercial fishing lodges is available. Small stretches are public within the Chattahoochee National Forest. A portion of the river is also within the Tray Mountain Wilderness. The Soque River and its watershed are located entirely within the county boundaries of Habersham County in northeast Georgia. The Soque is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. Portions of the river run along State Route 197.

This program is sponsored nationally by Trout Unlimited and supported locally by the Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This environmental education…

Monster Browns Of The Chattahoochee

Its banks are not much to look at. Muddied. Eroded. Developed. Trashed. No doubt, the Chattahoochee River, where it runs through the northern metro Atlanta suburban landscape, leaves little to the imagination of trout anglers anywhere else. But here in Georgia, we learned long ago that the water that runs between those adjectives is clean…

Georgia Trout: Not The West, But…

Nope. Georgia is not the West. But trout fishing in Georgia is not unlike the West… where nimble fly-rodders test technical skills on small, wild trout streams. Where trolling for large lake-bound trout is executed with electronic aids and flashy rigs. Where driftboats carry anglers over long river glides and rocky shoals. Where dams pour…

Wildcat Creek Campground Closed, Fishing Still Open

Wildcat Creek has always been a popular destination for trout anglers. This small stream that runs through a portion of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Rabun County is stocked seasonally with trout and has offered two primitive campgrounds for a fee of only $10 a night. However, a short while back, GON received a phone call from…

Rare Fish Caught In Lake Allatoona

Bob Geresti didn’t expect his last-minute decision to go fishing one afternoon on Lake Allatoona to result in catching a rare breed of trout. A tiger trout—a cross between a brook and a brown trout—is a rare find in any Georgia lake, and until now one has never been documented from Lake Allatoona. The fish was…
