Lake Worth

Lake Worth, also known as Lake Chehaw, is a small reservoir at the confluence of the Flint River, Kinchafoonee Creek and Muckalee Creek. The concrete Flint River Dam was built in 1908 for hydroelectric generation and is owned by Georgia Power today. Lake Chehaw is very riverine and shallow with average depths of 17 feet. In winter, the lake is drawn down nearly 10 feet in anticipation of flooding spring rains. In the Flood of 1994, the lake overflowed its banks and the dam itself was underwater at one point.

Three-Bait Plan For Cold-Water Bass On Bartletts Ferry

It is the dead of winter. Water temperatures are below 50 degrees, and the weather fronts are coming through back to back driving the barometer up and down on an almost daily basis. This is tough fishing at its best. Where would you go to find bass? In most Georgia reservoirs the faithful will go…

Golden Rules For Varner Bass

I remember the planning meeting when the GON editorial staff was sitting around a table deciding which lakes to hit in February. Brad Gill, the in-house Lake Varner expert said, “February is the time to go roll a big un.” I was pleased to draw such a plum assignment because I had never had the…

This 30,000-acre Alabama Power impoundment spans the Georgia-Alabama border on the Coosa River. Although the lake spills into two states, all…

Lanier Striped Bass In January

Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta, has long been known as a quality striper fishery. Stocking programs have been very successful over the years, and the reservoir has a good population of these landlocked saltwater bass, many of which are of trophy size. While the striper fishing on Lanier can be good year round, the winter…

Allatoona’s Shallow January Spotted Bass

The day on Lake Allatoona was perfectly suited for duck hunting. A storm had dumped two inches of rain across much of the state for the previous day and a half, and the low, slate-gray clouds overhead continued to open intermittently during the trip. The weatherman had predicted temperatures in the 40s, but I must…
