Lake Worth
Lake Worth, also known as Lake Chehaw, is a small reservoir at the confluence of the Flint River, Kinchafoonee Creek and Muckalee Creek. The concrete Flint River Dam was built in 1908 for hydroelectric generation and is owned by Georgia Power today. Lake Chehaw is very riverine and shallow with average depths of 17 feet. In winter, the lake is drawn down nearly 10 feet in anticipation of flooding spring rains. In the Flood of 1994, the lake overflowed its banks and the dam itself was underwater at one point.

On a windy Wednesday evening in mid-September, we were nestled under the Kellogg Creek bridge at Lake Allatoona. We had planned to fish the following Saturday, but Hurricane Ivan was due to arrive on Thursday and the lake was likely to be unfishable by Saturday. Lyndon Kolb, Cy Grajcar, Gary Holt and I had come…
Carters Lake has long been known for its trophy spotted bass. Spots of five pounds and more are not uncommon on this deep north Georgia reservoir north of Atlanta off I-575. The habitat in Carters is simply perfect for this feisty fish, and the catches over the years are a great indication of that fact.…
The “Home of the Monster Cats” has done it again… the Altamaha River in the Jesup area has yielded another monster catfish. Already home to the heaviest flathead catfish ever caught on rod and reel in Georgia, a 67 1/2-pounder wrestled to the side of a boat by Gene Middleton in 2000, the Altamaha last…
Since 1990, GON has been compiling lake and river records for 36 Georgia lakes and rivers. Over that period the largemouth-bass record at Lake Blackshear remained unfilled. Not anymore. We finally received documentation on a largemouth entry — and it’s a good one. On Tuesday evening, June 5, Clint Brownlee of Tifton was fishing with…
April is the time of year to be on Georgia’s lakes in search of slab-sized crappie. The fish can be caught using a variety of methods including trolling with minnows, pitching jigs to brush or even fishing bridge pilings. However, if you crappie fish any Georgia reservoir, especially those with lots of docks, shooting jigs…
