Lake Worth

Lake Worth, also known as Lake Chehaw, is a small reservoir at the confluence of the Flint River, Kinchafoonee Creek and Muckalee Creek. The concrete Flint River Dam was built in 1908 for hydroelectric generation and is owned by Georgia Power today. Lake Chehaw is very riverine and shallow with average depths of 17 feet. In winter, the lake is drawn down nearly 10 feet in anticipation of flooding spring rains. In the Flood of 1994, the lake overflowed its banks and the dam itself was underwater at one point.

Watching a fish approach and inhale a well-placed bait will weaken the knees of even the most experienced of us. Saltwater fly fishermen travel the world…

Trip To Shark Alley

In September, shark fishing is at its peak in the inlets and sounds along the Georgia coast. This peak is just what some anglers await each year. We went after “Jaws” in August, hoping to find more of what had recently been a big-fish bite along the coast. Capt. David Newlin took us out of…

Fishing For The Big Bass Bite At Lake Horton

When we arrived at the east ramp parking lot at Lake Horton in Fayette County, I was surprised to see that the lake was about four feet below full pool. Having been there just three weeks earlier, it was apparent the rain deficit was taking its toll on the 780-acre water-supply reservoir. However, the low-water…

For August Spotted Bass, Lanier Is Loaded!

On a Friday evening in late August, pleasure boats were buzzing in all directions over the bumpy surface of Lake Lanier. Apparently lots of folks had left work early and were squeezing in as much outdoor time as possible before things began to settle down for the winter. Tully Youngblood and I were perched on…

Hills And Trees For Clarks Hill Stripers In September

Clarks Hill Lake is the largest reservoir in Georgia. At 71,000 acres, it’s a center of outdoor recreation and is one of the best-known lineside fisheries in the state. And well it should be; Ed Bettross is the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) fisheries biologist assigned to Clarks Hill, and he has been working cooperatively…
