Lake Worth
Lake Worth, also known as Lake Chehaw, is a small reservoir at the confluence of the Flint River, Kinchafoonee Creek and Muckalee Creek. The concrete Flint River Dam was built in 1908 for hydroelectric generation and is owned by Georgia Power today. Lake Chehaw is very riverine and shallow with average depths of 17 feet. In winter, the lake is drawn down nearly 10 feet in anticipation of flooding spring rains. In the Flood of 1994, the lake overflowed its banks and the dam itself was underwater at one point.

With dog-day, afternoon temperatures peaking at about 100 degrees, Atlanta’s scorching black asphalt reaches temperatures suitable for frying an egg almost every day of the summer. During an afternoon thunder-shower, rainwater runs over these impermeable surfaces, leaching heat off the blacktop before flowing directly into the Chattahoochee River. This amounts to a death sentence for…
As another striped bass emerged from the depths of Lake Lanier after a well-fought tug-of-war, I soon realized what I’d been missing not making a trip to seek these big fish before. After only spending a half-day on the water with striper guide Shane Watson of Cumming, I knew I’d have to come back soon…
It was 5:30 a.m., and the mercury was still hovering around 80 degrees. The forecast for later that day called for triple-digit temperatures again. That would make five days in a row of sweltering 100-degree heat. It was mid August, and we were in the firm grip of one of the worst sustained heat waves…
The Lanier Striper Club has joined forces with the North Georgia Striper Club in an effort to boost participation in a SEEDS striper-fishing day on Lake Lanier. In last month’s issue of GON, we reported that a striper day for a dozen kids would be possible. Now, with help from the Lanier Striper Club, it…
A few years ago, bass fishermen discovered an amazing summer pattern on some Georgia lakes. Bass would hit topwater baits worked over deep water on some of the brightest, hottest days of summer. Blueback herring were the key to that pattern, and Lake Hartwell is one of the best lakes in the state to catch…
