The Macon Water Authority (MWA) will host their annual MWA Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Lucas this Saturday, March 7 from 8-11 a.m. in the kids’ fish pond. Registration starts at the pond at 7:30, and a weigh-in to determine winners will be at 11 a.m.
No license is required, and the event will be for kids 3 to 16 years of age. Fishing will be done from the bank. The pond is stocked with rainbow trout and catfish. Kids should bring their own fishing equipment and bait.
Paul Cumbess, a MWA employee, says a red wiggler fished about 1 foot below a cork is a good method to catch these fish. Snacks and prizes will be provided.
Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in four age group categories, as well as a grand prize given to the one reeling in the biggest catch of the day. The MWA will also have a drawing for additional gifts for those in attendance. Refreshments will be served, and admission is free.
The address of the Kids Fishing Derby is 150 Broach Lane in Macon, off of Upper River Road. The annual MWA Kids Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Authority and the Macon Water Alliance, a Georgia non-profit subsidiary of the MWA.
