Lake Seminole Fishing Report – May 2022

GON Staff | April 27, 2022

Seminole: Level: Full pool. Temp: 73 degrees. Clarity: The lake is muddy but Spring Creek is clear.

Bass: Guide Paul Tyre reports, “The bass fishing on Lake Seminole has been AWESOME through the month of April, and as we move into May, the bass fishing should get even better! If planning a trip to Lake Seminole in May, make sure you have some spinnerbaits and frogs in your boat. My favorite frog is a Spro Bronzeye Poppin’ Frog. It comes with a super strong and extremely sharp Gamakatsu hook that is strong enough to get the big bass out of the grass.”

Guide Chris Taylor reports, “To say that Seminole has been on fire is an understatement. The past month has been pumping out giant fish. Myself and Reid Heard both caught 10-pounders within eight days of each other. The shad spawn kicked off on the full moon. The big fish have been hanging around grass points next to deep water taking advantage of it. Try a Nichols Pulsator spinnerbait around the grasslines and points. I expect this to continue for the next few weeks. After the shad spawn dies down with the sun rising, work topwaters and worms along these same areas to pick off any fish still hanging around. You can find the shad spawning on offshore structure points that meet deep water with hydrilla or pepper grass on them. The shad spawn along these grasslines and the bass use them as ambush points for the vulnerable spawning shad. As we continue into May, work topwater plugs around variations in topped-out grass. Make sure you are on the lake early, these fish like to feed at dawn. Ten-inch worms like the Countryboy Baits Po’ Boy worked slow around grass points and outside clumps can produce big fish, also. Tune in to our weekly Lake Seminole Ramblin’s podcast for weekly fishing news for the lake.”

Guide Matt Baty reports, “The shad are beginning to spawn all over the lake. The Westside Team Trail three-fish tournament was recently held with 17.84 taking first place and 15 pounds just to get a check. Look for shallow vegetation such as lily pads and peanut grass in the backwaters of the Flint River and Chattahoochee for the shad to spawn. Throw a white 3/8-oz. Berkley PowerBait Swim Jig with a 3.8-inch white PowerBait Power Swimmer on 50-lb. x9 braid to entice strikes in the grass. The strikes will come fast and hard, so a fast reel and stout rod is needed to winch the big ones out of the cover. An Abu Garcia Revo Rocket paired up with a 7-3 heavy fast Veritas PLX rod is a good combination for this technique. Throwing a 1/2-oz. white ChatterBait or a crankbait is a good pattern to catch the deeper shad spawn fish in Spring Creek. A chameleon pearl colored Berkley Dredger 17.5 is a good crankbait to use because this year the grass has really died back in Spring Creek in most places. Ripping the crankbait out when it comes in contact with the grass is a good way to draw reaction strikes. Reel the ChatterBait really slow to get down in the grass, then use your rod to pop it free when it hits the grass to draw strikes. I like 15-lb. Berkley 100% fluorocarbon for both of these techniques.”

Shellcrackers: Guide Matt Baty reports, “Good. The shellcrackers are beginning to spawn around backwater islands and up in the reeds on Spring Creek. Guide Paul Tyre reports, “The shellcracker have been bedding and will continue through May. The bream will begin bedding in May, also, and is an exciting way to introduce kids into fishing.
