Lake Seminole Fishing Report – March 2022

GON Staff | February 24, 2022

Seminole: Level: 0.2 feet below 77.5. Temp: Low 60s. Clarity: Stained in some of the creeks but cleaner on the main lake.

Bass: Guide Aaron Crews reports, “Spring is around the corner. The bass are in prespawn. Right now Carolina-rigged lizards, swimbaits, a black or purple Johnson spoon, a spinnerbait,  flipping craw-type baits and jig ’n pigs are working. When the water gets 65 degrees, the bucks will start to fanning beds. The first places to look are the northwest ends of wind-sheltered pockets of shallow water. When the fish are bedding, you’ll need a good pair of polarized sunglasses in grey or brown lens color. A Rat-L-Trap is a good search bait. Fish blue-back and chrome in clear water and red/black crawfish color in stained. As fish move up, the big female bass will hit a 550 A.C. Shiner jerkbait. There are several baits to use on bedding bass. Tubes are a favorite of mine on a spinning reel. A Carolina- or Texas-rigged lizard pitched in the bed is a good method. Light weighted or no weight Senko-type baits work well on beds. Creature baits that imitate bed-raiding fish and salamanders work well. Remember boat control. You must never block access to deep water. If you do, the fish will leave the bed and not come back until you’ve left the area. You must put the boat as shallow as the bed and most importantly don’t let your shadow fall across the fish. As for power techniques, a buzzbait over the beds or a spinnerbait and speed worm near the beds will catch big female bass. I generally use fluorocarbon 14-lb. test in a 6-6 to 7-foot baitcaster for these lures. I sometimes throw a jig or Texas-rigged lizard on a baitcaster for bedding bass. I fish tubes on 8- to 10-lb. test on a 6-foot, heavy-action spinning reel.”

Various Species: Guide Aaron Crews reports, “Panfish such as bluegill, redbreast and shellcracker are beginning to move shallow, and red wigglers and crickets will be good choices. Catfish are to be taken on red wigglers and cutbait. Jackfish are active and will hit spinnerbaits and small spoons like Little Cleo’s and silver Johnson spoons. This time of year the water color will change day to day due to rains upstream in the rivers and creeks. Temperature in the river systems will vary according to the opening and closing of the gates.”
