Lake Seminole Fishing Report March 2011

GON Staff | February 23, 2011

Seminole: Level: 0.7 feet below full pool. Temp: 60-62 degrees. Clarity: Flint River is muddy; Chattahoochee and Spring Creek have normal visibility for this time of year, about 3 to 4 feet of visibility.

Bass:
Excellent. Look no farther than the tournament reports on page 82 for an idea of what the fishing is like on Seminole. Jim Murray Jr. said, “I fished a tournament last weekend (Feb. 19), caught 18 pounds and felt like I zeroed.” Thirty-lb. sacks are showing up at weigh-ins, which Jim said is because the big fish are feeding up before heading to the beds. There are already some smaller fish on beds in the backwater sloughs, but the big fish are on grasslines and sandbars in 6 to 12 feet of water. A rattle bait is the ticket. Jim likes a Shad Rap painted in a bluegill pattern by CBT, as bluegills are the main forage. Tick your bait over the top of the grass lines, and rip it out when you get hung up. “The bigger the bait, the better the bite,” said Jim. A CBT football jig in tilapia color, brown and orange, is also producing some good fish pitched to big stumps and trees on the grasslines. The fish should be moving to the beds hard on the next new moon on March 4. Then Jim likes to fish scattered sand and grass in just a few feet of water with a Zoom Ultra Vibe Texas rigged on a 3/16-oz. Tungsten weight. He said it looks like a needlefish, which bass will aggressively run off of their beds.
