Lake Seminole Fishing Report – February 2022

GON Staff | January 28, 2022

Seminole: Level: 0.3 feet above 77.5. Temp: Upper 50s to low 60s. Clarity: The Flint River arm has been stained from the recent rains, Spring Creek remains clearer and the Chattahoochee River side has a good stain to it.

Bass: Guide Aaron Crews reports, “The bass will begin to start moving up to spawning areas. That means that umbrella rigs should be working February through March on staging fish. Fish Carolina rigs on deep, underwater points on the upcurrent sides of islands. Place the boat shallow and cast to deeper water, bringing the lizard up through the limbs and debris stacked by the current. You will find big female bass in this trash. The buck bass will move up and start fanning a bed. This will happen on the full and new moons predominantly. Weather fronts will cause the fish to move up and then back to the first break line in the contour of the lake. On the bed, I recommend tube jigs, jig ’n pig and lizards. During fronts, I back out to the first break line and use ChatterBaits (white or black/blue), spinnerbaits (white or chartreuse, depending on water color), a Speed Worm in junebug with a 1/16- to 1/8-oz. weight. Try swimbaits (white crystal) with a 3/16-oz. weight. A Johnson spoon is also a good choice and may land you a bass of a lifetime. I prefer silver, black or purple ones, depending on the water color, as well as the amount of sunlight. Another good reaction bait this time of year is a Rat-L-Trap in orange and black craw and Texas red in stained water and blue chrome or gold black back in clear.”

Capt. Paul Tyre reports, “The bass fishing has been excellent the first couple of weeks of the new year. As we move into February, the bass will be staging in their prespawn areas feeding and preparing for the spawning cycle. Spinnerbaits, swim jigs and lipless crankbaits will be productive lures to cover water. One of my favorite early spring spinnerbaits is a 1/2-oz. Booyah Covert series spinnerbaits in chartreuse and white fished along the grasslines and over the grass flats. A great swim jig is the Untamed Tackle Heavy Cover Swim Jig. It comes with an Owner Jungle Flipping Hook, which is a great hook that can be used on fluorocarbon or heavy braided line. Another great feature of Untamed Tackle products is no super glue is needed for your trailer due to the patent-pending Quad Keeper. One of my favorite lipless crankbaits is a Profound Outdoors Azuma Shaker Z in Seminole breeze. This is a proven color that catches big ones! This is a great lure for covering the grass flats.

Multiple Fish Species: Guide Aaron Crews reports, “Chain pickerel are shallow now and on spinnerbaits, spoons and Rat-L-Traps. Catfish are beginning to move up in the 6- to 10-foot depth of water. They are on cutbait, worms and minnows. Some bigger blues in the 15- to 20-lb. range are being caught drifting cutbait. Crappie are beginning to move shallow into the 7- to 10-foot depths and are being caught on minnows and jigs. Redbreast, bluegill and shellcracker are in 10 to 15 feet of water on worms and red wigglers. Stripers and hybrids are schooling on shad. Shad pattern crankbaits, Little Georges and Rat-L-Traps will work here. If you follow the birds, you’ll find them. When you see turtles on the logs sunning themselves, the bass are in the area. If you see wader birds in an area, the bass are there. If you see the dogwoods in bloom, you can bet the bass are bedding.”
