Lake Oconee Crappie Fishing Report – May 10, 2024

Ronnie Garrison | May 10, 2024

Oconee: Level: 0.8 below 435. Temp: 72 degrees. Clarity: Clearing.
Crappie: Guide Tom Hamlin reports, “Most crappie are done spawning, but I’m still catching some adult females with heavy roe. I believe with the water clearing up, these fish will spawn on big timber, unlike those that normally go to the bank. The fact is that a bunch are still carrying heavy eggs!

“This week most of the crappie have still been hanging around coves with timber or brush. They are shallow in 6 to 12 feet of water. A few fish are showing up in timber on summer patterns, but not many.

“I use a 1/16-oz.  jig that has tinsel in the tail. One trick that I do is to Super Glue the body so it stays together.

“If the water remains clear within the next 30 days, most crappie will have left docks and coves and will be offshore in timber or brush. Remember the deeper you fish, the smaller they get!”
