Lake Eufaula Fishing Report – October 2009

GON Staff | September 29, 2009

Eufaula: Level: 2.7 feet above full pool. Temp: Mid 80s. Clarity: Muddy on the main lake, stained in the creeks.

Largemouths: Good. Sam Williams said you don’t want to be on the main lake right now unless you’ve got a steel hull to deflect all the big trash floating down the lake. However, the fish have moved into the creeks, and they can be caught. He said to look for birds and fish working bait on the surface in clear water back in the creeks. When you find them, fish the top with a frog, spinnerbait or buzzbait, but if you want to catch the bigger fish, fish below those schoolies. Sam likes a Rat-L-Trap, and sexy shad is tearing them up right now. Grass is also producing — fish a Big Bite finesse worm on a shaky head or a Texas rig on grass edges. Plum appleseed, junebug and watermelon candy are good colors. Don’t forget to throw to the newly submerged grass created by the water coming up. Bass are chasing bait back behind the normal grass line, and they can be caught on the same baits. First thing in the morning, a frog in the grass can draw explosive strikes from big fish.
