Lake Eufaula Fishing Report – May 2025

GON Staff | April 30, 2025

Eufaula: Level: 1.5 feet above 188. Temp: 68 degrees. Clarity: Rivers have a good stain, but the creeks are murky.

Bass: Jake Maddux, with Guiding and Advanced Electronics Trips, reports, “The month of May is a month of change on Lake Eufaula. Some patterns are ending while others are beginning. One of the reasons Eufaula is so good is the extended spawning season compared to most lakes. February through May you may find bass on beds. While May is the tail end of the spawn, some bass will head off the bank, while others will stay shallow. For the shallow-water pattern it’s pretty simple; focus in on the bream beds or mayfly hatch. Go to a shallow bait, like a Deps Buster K popping frog in swampster or visible black colors. For the offshore bite, things get a little more advanced. The bass may be on a variety of structure, such as roadbeds, ledges, timber patches, brushpiles, pond dams, etc. Usually my two-prong approach for offshore fish will work. Find mid-range brush and also look as deep as possible, especially if  the water is clear. There is no better bait than big crankbaits, like the Deps Evoke 4.0 squarebill. Yes, it’s a squarebill, but it will get down to 12 feet, and it’s great for burning over tops of brushpiles. That will usually catch the biggest bass in the pile. For a clean-up bait, use a Texas-rigged Big Bite Baits B2 curly tail worm in plumb apple behind a pegged 1/2-oz. sinker. For schools on the ledges, big crankbaits, big swimbaits, big spoons, big everything really, and the only exception is cleaning up with a drop shot when there is not much current.” Capt. Sam Williams, with Hawks Fishing Guide Service, reports, “The water level remains steady, and this is allowing the spawning bass to finish up their bedding. It is mind boggling how many times you can present a bait in front of them and get ignored. If you see the buck holding near, look a little farther out from the bed. You may find a second buck, and it will have her full attention. Blade baits and frogs are doing the job in the covered areas. A fluke rigged weightless is a good choice. Texas-rigged stick baits are also a great choice. Squarebill shallow crankbaits in the size of the shad are also doing well on the rocky shorelines. Jigs with a creature bait will get a strike, but work it slowly. Best colors now are greens, black/blues and red shad. Flukes in pearl with the tail dipped in J.J’s Magic chartreuse are working. Carolina-rigged large, dark curly tail worms are what the deeper fish are eating. A jig with a large creature bait will work on the deeper fish, as well.”

Multiple Species: Capt. Sam Williams, with Hawks Fishing Guide Service, reports, “The shellcrackers should be bedding on the flats on the next full moon. If the wind remains calm, you will be able to smell the beds, and that makes them easy to locate. Wigglers fished on the bottom is the best presentation here. Jug fishing is getting back to normal for the catfish. It is really fun to put out 30 or so, and if the fish are eating good, it will keep you busy on the trolling motor running them down. This is especially a good way to keep kids from getting restless waiting on a bite from a single rod in the water. Cutbait and stir-fry strips are a good jug bait. Bottom fishermen are getting bit on nightcrawlers. Bluegill are beginning to gather near the shoreline cover and blowdowns. Wigglers and crickets are best here. Remember to pray for all our heroes in uniform and their families as they suit up every day to protect us and our rights. Pray for one another just as Jesus loves us. John 3:16 tells us, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” If we have Jesus in our heart, there is no room for hate.”
