Bass: Tournament angler Tyler Morgan, with Summerland Outdoors, reports that there’s not a whole lot of good fishing going on in July, but you can catch some bass. Fish early mornings, late afternoons and at night. In mid-June, Adam Byrd won a night tournament with 25 pounds. “For daytime, start before the sun comes up, fishing main-river grassbeds with a Toad Buzz—a green-pumpkin Horny Toad on a buzzbait. Also try a hollow-body frog in the grass,” Tyler said. “Stay with places that get some current, avoiding backwaters. As the sun gets up, go up the river and cast a frog under overhanging bushes. Current helps a lot. Also, flip a creature bait or a 1/2-oz. Untamed Tackle Dirty Craw jig into any cover on outside bends and skip under docks. If current is moving, work a 3/16-oz. Untamed Tackle Shakin Ace shaky head with a Zoom green-pumpkin Trick Worm on bluff banks in the river. Dip the tail in chartreuse dye and hit current breaks on rocky bluffs and points. A small finesse jig will also work well. During the day, always keep a small topwater bait, like a Spook Jr., ready to hit surface activity. I like baits I can throw a long way. Although it is not a consistent pattern, you are likely to see some bass hemming up shad, and topwater is a good way to land a 2.5-lb. spot. At night, fish lighted boat docks with crankbaits, jigs or a small swimbait, like a Keitech 2.8, on a 1/8-oz. head under and around the lights. You will catch largemouth, spots, hybrids and crappie.”
