Black Water

Craig James | April 29, 2021

I managed to make my first trip to the Caribbean a few summers back and fell in love with the warm waters of the tropics. If you have never been yourself, I highly recommend you slide it to the top of the old bucket list. Trust me when I say that you will be glad you did.

I’ve been blessed to snorkel around the reefs of Grand Cayman, explored Mayan Ruins in Cozumel, roamed the islands of the Bahamas, and as I’m typing this story, I’m flying back from the island of Jamaica where I just celebrated a 12th anniversary with my wife. Yeah I know that it’s hard to believe someone would put up with me for that long, but yes-sir, this old Georgia boy loves the Caribbean. That big blue water is truly a sight to see.

But it ain’t black water, and it never will be.

They say God puts you right where you need to be, and I truly believe it. You see I grew up just a short walk through the woods from the Satilla River where I spent my summers with my buddies wading from sandbar to sandbar chasing rooster redbreasts and swimming in the Satilla’s tannic-stained waters.

Now as summer after summer keeps passing by, I realize more and more that it wasn’t coincidence that gave me this life on the black water. No, I’m convinced God knew before I took my first breath that I’d love the Satilla River.

I’ve spent countless hours on the river in the nearly 30 years I’ve fished it, and every trip still seems to be better than the one before. Sometimes when the fish ain’t biting, I like to paddle my kayak to a place far away from everything and everyone else and just sit on the warm Satilla sand and take it all in. It’s a sight to see painted by the hand of God himself.

If you’ve never seen the Satilla, do it. Don’t put it off another year.

Well, the pilot just announced we’re landing soon. Time to wrap this one up. I can already feel the Satilla calling me home. Like I said earlier, I love that blue water, but it won’t ever be black.

Mr James is not the sharpest crayon in the box in my opinion. why would anyone invite everyone in Ga to their favorite fishing hole. There must be a financial incentive somehow.
