Woods-N-Water Artifact Adventures

Like to hunt points? Consider a weekend learning more about Native American weapons and tools.

Our long-time friends at Woods-N-Water Hunting and Fishing Adventures are embarking on a brand-new business venture that will absolutely be of interest to some hunters and fishermen. They have just announced that Woods-N-Water Artifact Adventure weekends will begin in June 2021 and will take place in Wilkinson County.

“Guests and families will learn more about Native American weapons and tools from our distinguished guest speaker, Thad Beckum,” said Blaine Burley, president of Woods-N-Water. “Thad is part Cheraw Pee Dee Indian and has devoted most of his adult life to studying Native Americans and their primitive weapons. Thad grew up hunting and fishing in Georgia and is a renowned primitive bowhunter and maker. To date, he has taken 34 deer, two wild turkeys and numerous wild hogs with his hand-made primitive bows and arrows.”

Five weekends have been set up during the summer of 2021. Participants will arrive in camp on Friday afternoons and spend some time fishing, shooting bows/guns, hiking, sitting around the campfire and enjoying all the amenities offered at Woods-N-Water. Participants will have the option to purchase a hog hunt for an additional $100.

“On Saturday, there will be numerous seminars on Native American history and culture, their weapons/tools, as well as Thad’s demonstrations on making primitive weapons, like primitive bows, arrows and spears,” said Blaine. “Later in the afternoon, we will talk about where and how to find Native American artifacts on your own land.”

On Sunday, participants will actually be able to go artifact hunting on Woods-N-Water property, which was a major trade route for the Native Americans and is home to numerous Native American campsites that date as far back as 10,000 years.

“We have recovered thousands of artifacts on these campsites, which are now displayed in our on-site museum,” said Blaine. “I’d really like to see families come out and spend a weekend with us. I know this time of year families are looking for fun places to go, and I can’t think of a better weekend than learning about these Native Americans and how they lived.”

The dates for the Woods-N-Water Artifact Adventure weekends are June 11-13, July 9-11, July 23-25, Aug. 6-8 and Aug. 20-22. The cost will be $550/adult and $275/child under 16 years old. The package includes lodging at WNW Plantation outside of Irwinton. To add an evening hog hunt, the cost will be an additional $100/hunter. Each hunter can harvest one hog during the trip.
