Lake Allatoona Fishing Reports – April 2021
GON Staff | April 1, 2021
Allatoona: Level: Full pool. Temp: 61 degrees. Clarity: Stained.
Bass: Tournament angler Matt Driver reports, “Fishing on Lake Allatoona is nothing less than amazing in the month of April. Fish are moving shallow and spawning. If you have a favorite technique, you can catch fish with it. There’s not many secrets on how to catch some this time of year. They all have the feed bag on. For numbers, it’s best to key in on those fish that are still prespawning. Largemouth will spawn first on Lake Allatoona, and mid to late month most spotted bass we will be on bed. Right now the spotted bass are schooling and can be caught several different ways. In the month of April, I start the morning off with topwater. I like to throw a Zara Spook and a popper-style bait. This bite typically lasts until around 8:30 or 9. Once the topwater bite ends, I like to move to shallow cover and rocky points to throw a soft plastic jerkbait and a hard-body jerkbait. It is not unheard of to catch 20 to 30 fish a day using this technique. A white fluke or a Pointer 78 jerkbait is what I am throwing right now and having the best results with. When the spotted bass go on bed or are holding tight to the bottom, a tungsten Picasso Lures Ned heads and a green-pumpkin Roboworm Ned Worm are hard to beat. The key to this bite is to drag it slowly. Don’t pop it or work it fast. Slow is better with this bait. The month of April begins with a bass spawn, and by the end of the month toward the first part of May we will see a shad spawn begin. The jerkbait and topwater will definitely catch them. When fish go deeper, try a paddletail swimbait for the best results.”
Linesides: Guide Robert Eidson, of First Bite Guide Service, reports, “Good! The spring bite has started. The white bass are making their spawning runs up both the Etowah and Little rivers. The hybrids and stripers are feeding heavily down on the main lake and should start their spawn migration run north on the next full moon. The south end of the lake is fishing very well right now. The threadfin shad are moving into the backs of the creeks and pockets, and the stripers and hybrids are migrating with the bait. Threadfins fished on flatlines and planer boards have been our better bites. The fish are very aggressive and are blowing our bait completely out of the water. We are also catching some really nice fish blind casting jerkbaits. Mid lake is also fishing well right now. We have seen some sporadic topwater action out in front of Bartow Carver at first light. The striper and hybrid bite on the north end of the lake has been slow compared to the south end, but that will change in the next few days with the upcoming full moon. It has been a very long winter. Now it’s time to dust off your reels, grab the kids and hit the water.”
