Lake Blackshear Fishing Report – February 2006
GON Staff | February 1, 2006
Blackshear: Level: Full pool. Temp: 50-55 degrees. Clarity: Good fishing color.
Bass: Clint Brownlee, who with Gerry Gray won the Blackshear Buddies Classic in December, said the fishing has been slow. Try about halfway back in the creeks and sloughs, starting with a crankbait as a fish-finder lure. When Clint catches a fish on the crankbait, he switches over to a Texas-rigged worm or jig ’n pig, slows down, and works the area more thoroughly for other fish. The bass have been around docks and wood in four to six feet of water. Ernie Broughton said the first Blackshear Buddies tournament was a good one, with an 18-lb. stringer winning. The second tournament, held January 21, was not so good — it took 9.9 pounds to win. Things that should be working this time of year, like green-pumpkin worms or a jig ’n pig on ledges or around deep docks, did not catch fish. Cranking the banks, usually a sure thing, or throwing a spinnerbait to wood structure, also zeroed. Ernie caught a 2 1/2-pounder in a spring in the state park on a green-pumpkin worm on a Carolina rig but could not get another bite there or in the spring in Boy Scout Slough. “Worms are usually dynamite this time of year,” said Ernie. Strong colors are green pumpkin or red bug.
