Lake Weiss Fishing Report – September 2019

Weiss: Level: 0.2 feet below full pool. Temp: Mid 80s. Clarity: Light stain.

Bass: Guide and tournament angler Mike Carter reports, “The hot days of summer are almost behind us, and the fishing activity on Weiss is getting ready to go into full swing. This means the Coosa spotted bass are getting ready to kick into another gear and show off their aggressiveness. Seawalls and rip-rap that are close to some deeper water will be the pattern to focus on early in the day for September bass on Weiss. When the sun gets up, take an Echo squarebill crankbait and cover the rocky and stumpy points. This crankbait pattern can produce some great action. Both of these patterns consist of covering a lot of water to look for the more aggressive bass, and these patterns will also hold true through the next couple of months.” Guide Mark Collins reports, “Most bass at Weiss are on a deeper, summer pattern on roadbeds, main-lake points and creek and river channel ledges. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits are catching fish when they’re active. With the latest heat wave, the water has heated back up, and the fishing has gotten tougher. A good cooling trend in September should trigger some better fishing.”

Crappie: Guide Mike Carter reports, “The crappie bite at Weiss is about to pick up a lot more during September and can be a little easier to pattern for some consistent action as they move out of their deeper haunts.” Guide Mark Collins reports, “Crappie fishing is fair. Most fish are out deep, showing up on deeper brush, where spider rigging with minnows is producing some fish. Night fishing under lights is the ticket for catching crappie right now. A cooling trend in September, should trigger some better fishing.”
