Lake Burton Fishing Report – March 2019

Burton: Level:4 feet low. Temp:54 degrees. Clarity: Clear.

Bass: Guide Wes Carlton reports, “The spotted bass bite has been great the last few days. We have caught most of our fish over a 12- to 17-foot bottom. Herring-colored jerkbaits have been the go-to baits. Most of the bigger fish have been following the schools of herring close to the main-lake channels. We have also been using a Super Spin tipped with a minnow-style trailer. Work this bait in the 15- to 25-foot depth using a slow-roll retrieve. The 3/8-oz. has been working best. Keep a topwater plug handy for surfacing fish. Don’t be surprised if you catch a 5- or 6-lb. spotted bass.”

Trout: Guide Wes Carlton reports, “The brown trout are still in the backs of the creeks. We have been catching most of our trout on the same jerkbaits that we have been using for bass. Be aggressive working the jerkbaits. These trout like a lot of speed when retrieving. We have caught some fish trolling spoons out over the main lake. Try targeting the 20-foot-depth range and maintaining a speed of 2.5 to 3 mph.”

Walleye: Guide Wes Carlton reports, “The walleye bite has been a little slow the last few weeks with most of the fish concentrating on spawning. The spawn should be over soon, and these fish will be biting again. Try working brushlines along the banks in 20 to 30 feet of water. A small jig tipped with a live minnow or a Fluke Jr. works well.”
