Lake Weiss Fishing Report December 2017
GON Staff | November 28, 2017
Weiss: Level: 3.7 feet below full pool. Temp: Low 60s. Clarity: Some stain.
Bass: Guide and tournament pro Mike Carter reports, “This can be one exciting lake to fish during the fall and winter months. The water level has started to drop, and the clarity is a little stained, but with some consistent weather this lake will get fired up very soon. Covering a lot of shallow stump flats and rocky points with Choo Choo Lures Shakers, Rat-L-Traps and Echo crankbaits will be the most consistent baits to produce some great action for some aggressive Coosa River spotted bass and some giant largemouth this lake has been known for, especially in the last few years. Finding these kind of areas located near some deeper water will create better chances of having some consistent success for a Weiss Lake hawg.” Guide Mark Collins reports, “With a big cooling trend and the water temperature dropping, look for the Weiss bass to start moving shallow on the late fall and early winter feeding pattern. Bass fishing is good, and a lot of fish have moved shallow into the bays and coves following the shad. Rat L Traps, shallow-running crankbaits and spinnerbaits are catching fish.”
Crappie: Capt. Mike Carter reports, “The crappie fishing on Weiss Lake has really taken off in the past couple of weeks, but with the cooler weather moving in the slabs will really get cranked up and start producing some great action. Fish the creek channel ledges and the deeper docks with 1/32- to 1/24-oz. jigs on 4- to 6-lb. Vicious line to produce some solid limits of quality crappie for the freezer.” Guide Mark Collins reports, “Crappie fishing is good. They are biting good on the main Coosa River channel ledges in 12 to 18 feet of water. They can be caught spider rigging live minnows over structure. They are also being caught shooting docks with jigs.”
