Lake Weiss Fishing Report September 2016

Weiss: Level: 1.3 below full pool. Temp: Mid 80s. Clarity: Green from algae bloom.

Bass: Fair. Guide Mark Collins reports, “There has been a big algae bloom over the last few weeks, depleting oxygen from the water, making the fish lethargic. The rain over the past week will probably help the fishing. Bass fishing is fair, and the bite is getting slow with all the hot weather and lack of rain. Most bass are on deeper cover, under deeper docks, on the creek and river channel ledges, humps and submerged roadbeds. Bass are being caught on medium- to deep-running crankbaits, 1/2-oz. spinnerbaits, Carolina-rigged plastics and jigs. The topwater bite is fair on deeper banks and seawalls early and late. Some bass are still being caught shallow around grass close to the deeper banks.”

Crappie: “The Weiss crappie fishing is fair,” said Mark Collins. “Most fish are on the main Coosa River channel ledges in 12 to 16 feet of water on cover, and they can be caught spider-rigging with minnows. Night fishing is good under lights and over structure. A few fish are still being caught under docks, shooting jigs.”

Striper: Fair. “Stripers are being caught in the lower Chattooga River, at the Cave Hole in Little River and in Little Spring Creek,” said Mark Collins. “Try downlining and flatlining live shad 8 to 10 feet deep in the river channel.”

Catfish: “The catfish are biting good in the flats on cut bait,” Mark Collins said.
