Lake Blackshear Fishing Report January 2016

Blackshear: Level: 0.5 feet below full pool. Temp: 61 degrees. Clarity: Stained.

Bass: Stephen Birchfield reports, “The bite has been slowing down. The fish have filled up and are moving toward their winter pattern. There are still some fish to be caught, but they are tough to find. Swift Creek has had the clearest water and has produced the most consistent bite. Start at Smoak Bridge, and start working the ends of docks all the way to the old train tracks. Fish with a black Texas-rigged worm with red flake. Almost all of our bites have come from getting under the docks and slowly bouncing the worm out. Also try fishing a red Rat-L-Trap parallel to the dam. As the water cools, fish these Rat-L-Traps anywhere you find concrete (docks, boat ramps, seawalls). If you can stand the cold, the best fishing right now is working the lights at dark. Big Texas-rigged 12-inch worms in black have been catching the most fish. Throwing a Bull Shad past the lights and slow-rolling it back has produced a few fish 5 pounds and bigger.
