Clarks Hill Lake Fishing Report – August 2024

Clarks Hill: Level: 2.8 feet below 330. Temp: Mid to upper 80s. Clarity: Clear.

Bass: Guide and tournament angler Trad Whaley with BoneFinzoutdoors reports, “Dog days of summer are upon us. The best activity and bait right now is on the main lake. When it’s this hot, current is the key. Isolated cover on the main lake in big creek mouths are the best shallow-water option right now. Main-lake deep brush will be a key, also. Sometimes a reaction bite will work but mostly something slow. Check past GON articles on our local lake for this time of year, and you’ll have a great start. Confidence is key.”

D.J Hadden, with Hadden Outdoors, says August is typically a tough month to get on a solid pattern. A typical day in August is to start shallow with a buzzbait or a Pop-R. As the sun gets up, start focusing on structure. A Texas-rigged worm or shaky head in laydowns and offshore brush will draw bites. You can always catch some bass on a drop shot or shaky head on rocks from 10 to 25 feet deep, and you can catch some quality spots on this pattern. For deeper offshore brush, try a drop shot or Greenfish Tackle 3/4-oz. natural color jig with a matching Zoom Speed Craw. As the month winds down, look for more surface activity as the days get a little shorter.

Jon Hair, with Greenfish Tackle, says the fish are out in 20- to 30-foot deep brush. Most of the guys will catch them on the extremes—an Ol’ Monster worm or a drop-shot worm. Some bluegill will also spawn this month, especially around the Aug. 19 full moon. Find some bluegill beds and run a buzzbait over and around them early in the mornings.
