The number of 160-inch and better bucks killed during the 2023-2024 season fell below the 20-year average.

Next month, in the September issue of GON, we will feature our annual “Georgia’s Best Bow Bucks” article, but this year’s Fab 40 provides more than a sneak peek. The top four bucks killed in Georgia last season and six of the Top-10 bucks were bow-kills.

The Fab 40 is GON’s annual compilation of Georgia’s best bucks from the previous season. This exclusive list includes only bucks measured by certified scorers. The Fab 40 provides a great way to compare our deer seasons. The chart on the opposite page includes a 20-year average of how many bucks cracked the 150-class benchmark, the 160-mark, and how many scored high enough to qualify for the all-time Boone & Crockett record book. Last season was below average for Booners and 160-and-better bucks, and slightly above average for Georgia bucks that netted above 150 (non-typicals are factored).

The top buck of the season was a true suburban giant—a Gwinnett County velvet 11-pointer that netted 174 3/8 killed by Grant Bailey. Like many of the best bucks from last season, the hunt story of Grant’s buck is available at GON.com.
