West Point Catfising Fishing Report – July 19, 2024

Brad Gill | July 19, 2024

West Point: Level: Full at 635. Temp: 85-87 degrees. Clarity: Clear.

Catfish: Ronnie Garrison spoke with catfish angler TR Clark, who said the spawn for blues is winding down. Some flatheads are also coming off the nest. Expect blue males to be hunting and hungry to rebuild their body weight.

TR says, “This past weekend’s trip proved to me that it’s beginning. Typically, after the spawn, catfish like to go deep. The lake has developed a thermocline, limiting their ability to do so. It is at 28 to 30 feet deep on the main lake but some creeks as shallow as 10 feet deep. You can see it on a good depthfinder. The lake is stagnant, and we need rain and current to help stir the waters to help fish follow normal patterns. Nonetheless, you can find some quality fish hanging out above the thermocline.

“They are showing preference for bluegill, shellcracker and crappie for bait. Late evening into the night is showing the best bite, especially for the bigger fish, which is what I am after.”
