Lake Eufaula Fishing Report – October 2023

Eufaula: Level: 1 foot below 188. Temp: 80s. Clarity: Perfect stain.

Bass: Capt. Sam Williams, of Hawks Fishing Guide Service, reports, “The water continues to drop as we are suffering from lack of rain. The fish are responding to the cooler water and becoming more active. The shad are plentiful, so you must finesse and aggravate a bite because they are not hungry. The squarebill in a threadfin pattern with a touch of orange on the belly is a great choice for the rocks and where you find the fish feeding on shad pods. Remember the larger bass will hold deeper under the pods, so a rattletrap worked beneath the topwater fuss will get a bigger bite. Worms in greens and watermelon candy or junebug are working on Texas and Carolina rigs. Drop shots are catching fish in deeper spots. There are a lot of spots being caught right now. Be sure and take them out of the river. The fish biologists have taken off the size limit, so we can keep the smaller ones. If you do not eat them, share them with a friend or you can almost always find some bank fishermen near the launch that will be proud to eat them.”

Multiple Species: Capt. Sam Williams reports, “The crappie are settling down more and are hanging near structure, man-made or natural, in deeper water. Panfish continue to want all the crickets you can offer them. Find any blowdown or hanging brush on the shoreline and you are bound to get a good mess to eat. Catfish are doing OK on jugs baited with cutbait or shad if you have a place to throw your cast net. Hunting season is kicking in on both sides of the river and that will leave plenty of quiet time for you to take your loved ones out and make memories in God’s beautiful outdoors. Remember to pray for your military and all folks in uniform as they protect us and their families.”
