Hunt Story
We have been getting pictures of this buck along with several other 2- and 3-year-olds at our feeder for months. William helped me set up a 2-man ladder stand after we started getting regular pictures of him. On opening day we knew the wind wouldn't be perfect but he was eager to go so we decided to try it. We had a couple of does and fawns wind us and blow early in the hunt, but things calmed down by "Prime Time." Sure enough, just as the camera intel had been showing, a group of bucks started to march up the hill from the creek bottom toward us. When the tall-tined 8-point my daughter had nicknamed "Tom" got in the clear, I ranged him at 27 yards and William took aim. He had been starting to get anxious and a little discouraged from the does blowing at us, but now he was all business. Lots of practice paid off as he fired the crossbow and the bolt and lighted nock disappeared into the buck's chest with a loud "Whack"! We celebrated a little in the stand, but knew we needed to get our hands on him before too many high-fives. As soon as we found the blood covered arrow, I knew we would find him. My wife and daughter joined us for the bloodtrailing job which wasn't too hard. "Tom" hadn't made it very far and the celebrations began. As a father I have had the joy of seeing both my kids take up my passion for the outdoors and deer hunting. This is William's best buck so far, but I think he'll be entering a lot more in the Truck-Buck in years to come.
