Hunt Story
We have been chasing this buck since he first showed up on trail camera this summer. Never in bow range during bow season, then never in the clear with a rifle. Finally Saturday morning, after having small bucks chase does early and things fall silent by mid morning, I was contemplating climbing down. Around 10:20 a doe and fawn came in and started feeding in the white oaks. After 20 minutes or so they started easing into the clearcut, and I was watching intently just to see how long and far I could see them move through the tall brush. Directly over my opposite shoulder I hear a limb break followed by the tell tell steady walking sound of a buck on a mission. I turn around and see nothing but antlers as he is cruising toward me on a line to cross directly out in front of my setup. Without hesitation I knew this was the deer and I got ready, shouldered my gun and flipped the safety. As he quickly entered the wide opening directly in front of me a gave a hard grunt and he froze, BOOM, he dropped in his tracks 30 to 35 yards right in front of me. The excitement got me and I couldn't even legibly text my family and friends what I had just done. He is my largest racked buck in 27 years of hunting. Sporting a 20 1/2-inch outside spread and 25-inch main beams.
