Hunt Story

The 2024 youth opener started off very similar to last year with cool temps and a breath of wind out of the NW hitting us in the cheek. We were sitting in the same stand as last year when Tripp killed his first deer (an 8-point) on youth weekend and the conditions were eerily similar. We got in the tree about 30 minutes before shooting light and everything was still, not a lot of movement. Not long after we could see down our shooting lane pretty good, Tripp elbows me and says, "BIG BUCK, BIG BUCK DADDY"!! The deer was coming out from the right about 90 yards away, where I didn't have good visibility because of overhanging limbs. A few minutes later I see the deer step out, and it was a good buck. Tripp settled in his .243 single shot and waited for the buck to turn broadside. He squeezed off the shot, and the deer mule kicked and plowed into the woods to our left. We both heard the deer crash shortly after, so we knew the results were good. Tripp's sister Charlotte was hunting the same property that morning, so we waited for her to come participate in the tracking job. They walked down to the spot, found blood and followed it 40 yards to the deer!! Another great hunt spent with friends and family that we will not forget anytime soon.
