Hunt Story

At about 8 AM a doe came running across the clearcut planted in 3-year-old pines. About three minutes later a good 8-point came running through the same spot, and three minutes later a bigger 8-point came running through the same spot. Then about 10 minutes later this buck entered the clearcut running wide open. At first I was trying to decide whether or not to try and shoot him, but then I saw his tall tines and realized what deer he was. By then he was halfway across the clearcut, so I hollered at him as loud as I could but could not get him to stop. I followed him with my gun, losing him several times. I picked him back up when he went over a small hill still running and put my crosshairs on him and pulled the trigger. I saw him tuck his tail but thought he was sneaking out. The shot was over 300 yards, and he was moving, but I have shot running deer in the past with success. I then used as many trees and bushes to mark the last sighing of the buck, and after waiting approximately 30 minutes, as I was walking to the biggest tree that I had marked, he was lying in the firebreak. He ran about 40 yards from where I had shot him.
