Hunt Story

We finished church a little early Sunday afternoon, so I flew home and grabbed a shower and my bow. All my clothes were already in a scent-proof container in my truck. I got to the property around 6:10 p.m. and scaled 30 feet up in my climber between two different aged planted pines that were close to the edge of a peanut field. This buck was the first deer I saw, and at 7:38 p.m. he came into sight at 40 yards. He milled around on some leaves in the young planted pines. I could tell he still had some velvet, and he was a deer I'd seen from the stand and from my trail cam. My hope was that he would walk closer to my tree and give me a broadside shot, but it was looking like he was not going to get closer. It just so happened that he stepped into a clear lane at 40 yards, and I pulled back. I had a little trouble seeing through my peep because I was facing east, and though the sun had gone down over the trees behind me, there was enough ambient sunlight that made it harder to see through the peep sight. I finally felt confident to take the shot and let the arrow fly. The arrow made impact in his front shoulder, and I could see the bright red Lumenok bouncing up and down as he took off running north. After running about 25 yards I saw the arrow break off and hit the ground. I listened for a fall — maybe I heard it, but I wasn't quite sure. I waited about 30 minutes and decided to slip in and check out how much penetration I got from the arrow. At this time, I wasn't sure if I would come back the next morning to track him or start tracking him that night. Once I looked at the arrow, I realized more than half of it had broken off in him. Good news. I walked the trail he took and found him about 50 yards from where I shot him. The hardest part was loading him up in my truck!
