Hunt Story

The story of this deer started 3 years ago when we first got him on camera. We called him Bodacious because of his striking resemblance to the notorious bull in the rodeo circuit. We estimated his age to be 4.5+. I had an encounter with him at 12 yards in the 2020 season but he caught some movement he didn't like and I couldn't draw my bow back to get a shot on him. Once the 2021 season opened, I had him as one of my top 3 bucks to target. I shot a heavy mature 10 pt in early November and decided from that point forward, I was going after one deer and one deer only - Bodacious. November 13th rolled around and I witnessed one of the best rut hunts of my career. As dark was approaching that night, Bodacious showed at 32 yards and I flung an arrow at him. The shot felt good but it was a little dark to tell exactly where I hit him - all I knew at the time was he ducked and turned but I had thought my arrow had still found its mark. After trailing for 350 yards with the help of a few dogs, we lost the blood trail. The tracker determined at that point this deer is still alive. Two days later and sure enough he shows on camera again, this time with a graphic wound in his neck. Despite the wound he was still posturing on bucks and chasing does around. The following weekend came and I hunted him as much as I could in hopes I could put him down before any infection got him. Sure enough, as luck has it, he comes walking out in the broad daylight at 4:00 p.m. on November 20th. As he got to 28 yards, I knew he was mine. Topping the scales at 252 lbs, he surely lived up to his name.
