Hunt Story

On 12/19/2023 I decided to hunt a hardwood bottom on my property. The conditions and timing were ideal for catching a buck cruising. Just after daylight I hit my estrus can, grunted, and rattled. Within minutes I had a young buck on top of me. After a short period of time, he eased off. At around 9:40 I again hit my can, grunted, and rattled. Afterward I closed my eyes and said a prayer for for a close family in need. When I opened my eyes, a good buck was within 60 yards of me. When he walked through a gap in the trees I pulled the trigger on my little 350 legend. The buck instantly dropped. I then pulled my phone out of my pocket to take a pic of him and he stood up and ran into a thicket. I then climbed down and walked towards the thicket. I then found bright red lung blood sprayed amongst the gallberries. I then caught a whiff of the musty tarsal glands. I looked up and saw his antlers sticking up. Walked up to him and he was a beautiful mature 8-pointer. It was a hunt that I’ll never forget. I’m fortunate to be able to chase these animals. It’s what I love.
