First hunt on a friend’s farm for 2023. I’ve been hunting whitetail for over 35 years and sometimes you work hard and sometimes you get lucky. This was one of those (got lucky) times. On this particular afternoon, I decided to sit over a freshly turned peanut field. I parked the truck at the wood line, and made the quarter-mile trek to the stand. Soon after getting comfortable, a young 7-point eased out and began feeding on the field. About 20 minutes later, a group of four does entered the field around 200 yards in front of me. They fed for around 15 minutes, before I looked up and noticed an additional member joined the group, who was considerably larger. I glassed him and immediately made the decision to take the deer - 12-point with several stickers below the brow tines. By far, the largest whitetail I have taken.
